2010 Olympics

Are you watching? I don't know what it is about this year, but I've watched almost every minute of it! It started off as trying to show the girls what they are all about and get them interested in them as well, to an obsession to watch nearly every sport, every Canadian. I have enjoyed most of it except the Curling (sorry Mom. LOL) and the Hockey (Sorry everyone else). I just can't get into to much of that. I can watch one game here and there, or I should say PARTS of the games when they're exciting, or near the end but that's it. Now put on some skiing, or skating and I'm there. The Canadians have done amazingly well this year and have brought much cheering into our home these last two weeks. Even the teenager has been seen to show some excitement during both Ashleigh McIvor's and Maelle Ricker's gold medal runs. Mind you all was watched through texting thumbs, but hey... it was watched non the less.

I have to say the Olympics had a better outcome for us (a family) then we imagined just over a year ago. If it wasn't for Baby coming along the hubby would have been having to go work for 6 weeks or so. Not Cool! So between the new baby at home, and being promoted to a higher rank in a different section he was able to get out of that duty. Yippee!!! Let's just say momma would not have been happy!

Now for the laundry, and a first impression of the Bum Genius 3.0

So I only have 7 cloth diapers so far. I used 4 the first day and 3 the next and non of which came out poopy in the end. (hehe) So the laundry was pretty easy. Finding the right detergent was not. You can't just use regular detergent, as the additives in there will cause build up on your diapers and cause liquids to repel... that would not be a good thing. So after much searching online of what was good and what wasn't and what was actually available to me locally, I found a recipe to make my own. Borax, Arm and Hammer Washing Soda, and Oxy Clean. 2 Cups of each, then a Tbs of that mixture in each small load. Anyway... I'm hoping that that along with a pre-soak, and a Vinegar rinse, it does the trick. Only time will tell.

My first impression of all the diapers was really good. The only one I had a struggle with was the Bum Genius 3.0, one of the name brand diapers. I was surprised as it is one of the velcro fastening ones and I thought that would be easier. It fit bulky in the front and it didn't come together as nicely as the others, like he was too big around the waist for it or something. Maybe my insert was too front forward but with a boy, that's kinda where I need it. Oh and the tag is kind of in a weird spot as all the others are sewn on flat so as to not stick out. Function wise, I think so far so good. Please keep in mind this is my first impression, and I'm new to this so I think my feelings towards it will improve in time. Oh and I LOVE the color. LOL

Did I hear right? Cloth diapers???

Yes sir, I'm using cloth diapers! I decided a while ago while taking out one of many full garbage bags of diapers that this is ridiculous. I am adding this much to the garbage of the world twice a week or so, and am wreaking havoc on our budget replacing all that garbage with new ones that just end up in the same place. I don't know why I didn't feel this way with Daelyn, but for some reason it's bothering me this time around. Maybe, because of some great friends who have exposed me to the world of cloth, I am educated on the ease of use of the new generation of diapers and don't run away screaming at the idea of cloth. I researched these new diapers, the cost, the laundry techniques, and all that is involved and decided I wanted to try. There are so many different brands, and so many kinds; prefolds (which are basically rectangle pieces of absorbent material folded and secured) or fitted with covers, all in ones, pocket diapers, one size, or sized to fit it and it goes on. I decided to go with one size pocket diapers. The are basically just like disposables, except that you have an insert to put in a pocket, and that is what absorbs. It has it's own cover and does up with snaps or velcro which ever you prefer. I got a few different brands to try out and see which I like best or what does and doesn't work. A couple of them are velcro, the rest are snaps. I got some off Etsy, that are home made, and some from stores that are Brand Name.

Yesterday was my first day using them and it was fun and successful! I used four diapers, with only one leak. I think I may have left him a little longer than I should, or maybe he just peed more than usual. It was a small leak and nothing major. And no Poop yet! *knock on wood* LOL I know he will, but hopefully not while in the cloth. There are flushable liners you can get to put inside that will keep them from staining and make disposing of the poop much easier. I have them on order so hopefully they'll be here soon. I'm not using them %100 of the time to start with and probably won't... well who knows, but for right now I'll use disposables for when we go out, and for over night. I'll have to build the trust on those times. Oh and the hubby says he won't change cloth diapers but I have a feeling I'll be able to get him too. It really is easy. I guess you can't see the diaper to well so I'll have to take better ones tomorrow. Oh and don't let the furrowed brow fool you, that is his default face. :)

I'll try to update with my reviews on the different brands as I get used to them.

I've been resurrected!

Well after 6+ months I've felt the need to blog. I don't know why... I don't think my ramblings are very important, and most of my family and friends keep up with us on Facebook yet here I am, logging in and making a new post. Stay tuned for pics and stories of what we've been up to lately and what's new in our lives. (And maybe blogging on my Mac will be much easier than on the old pc!)
